We are The Healthcare Charity for Deaf People, working to bring equality to health and healthcare for deaf people. We work with the healthcare providers, NHS etc. to improve access and services for deaf people; we also provide services such as supported living, advocacy, outreach and counselling and health promotion for BSL users. SignHealth also works to improve access to better communication in the care pathway for deaf people through SignTranslate - a web-based portal providing on-line interpreting, subtitles, pictures and BSL clips.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People
6. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People

We train dogs, mainly selected from rescue centres, to alert severely and profoundly deaf people to everyday household sounds. The dogs alert by touching the owner with a paw then leading to the source of the sound. For alarm sounds including the smoke alarm and fire bell, the dogs alert by touch then drop straight to the floor to indicate danger. Sounds the dogs alert to include the doorbell, alarm clock, cooker timer, telephone and baby cry. Further Information: The dogs are free to applicants. Minimum age for application is 18; no maximum age. The Charity is also running a pilot project placing hearing dogs with deaf children.

Text Relay
7. Text Relay

Text Relay connects people using a textphone with people using a telephone or another textphone. It lets deaf, hard of hearing and speech impaired people stay in touch with friends and family, and call businesses over the telephone. If you're using a textphone (sometimes called a Minicom) or you're calling someone from a standard telephone and think the person at the other end may have a textphone, Text Relay will connect you. It's a fully automated service so, when required, relay assistants provide a text-to-voice and voice-to-text translation service. Please Note: this service used to be called RNID Typetalk.
