Disability Alliance
3. Disability Alliance

Disability Alliance is a national registered charity with the principal aim of relieving the poverty and improving the living standards of disabled people. Our eventual aim is to break the link between poverty and disability. We provide information on social security benefits and tax credits to disabled people, their families, carers and professional advisers; undertake research into the needs of disabled people, with particular emphasis on income needs and promote a wider understanding of the views and circumstances of all disabled people. Our Tribunal Support Unit provided help to advisers in London who wanted to challenge benefit decisions for their clients. We offer an adviser’s helpline, free or reduced cost training and individual support to advisers including finding legislation and case law and preparing submissions. We are best known as the authors of the Disability Rights Handbook, an annual publication with a print-run of 30,000, but also have a range of other guides and other information on our popular website. The Disability Rights Handbook provides clear and concise information on the welfare benefits and tax credits systems, as well as other areas such as social and residential care and a range of other issues relevant to disabled people and their families. We feel this makes us particularly well-placed to comment on the complexities of the UK benefit system.

Disability Awareness UK
8. Disability Awareness UK

Disability Awareness - although SVA has been involved with all types of disability since 1963 we have now changed our title to Disability Awareness. We started this action 8 years ago working first in Chichester and spreading to the whole of Sussex, Hampshire, Croydon and parts of Surrey. We recruit young disabled - including blind and train them in public speaking, confidence training and allocate them to an experienced speaker. when they are confident they speak in schools. Age is no barrier, as some of our speakers have previously had good work experience we encourage them to make their own contact and where there is a 'group' based in one area we make bids for grants to enable them to have a shared base to work from. problem is we are all volunteers and need funding for a full-time executive officer to take over Fund-raising and Events.
